School Visits

Tour a local school and engage in an idea exchange about how equity, diversity, and multicultural education are manifested in school life and culture.

The visits are scheduled for Wednesday, November 29, from 8:30 AM–12:00 PM (all times listed are Central Time). Pre-registration is required for all school visits, and some require an additional fee.

City Academy/New City School

Take this special opportunity to visit two schools in one trip. First journey to City Academy, which serves children from age 3 through sixth grade from more than 40 ZIP codes—and is the only private, independent elementary school in St. Louis that provides scholarship support to 100% of students. Join us as we highlight the school's diversity and inclusivity; specialist model; English language arts and science, technology, engineering, art, and math (STEAM) curricula; and violin and Spanish instruction. Then travel to New City School, which inspires children to engage joyfully in learning and achieve academic excellence while cultivating their personal strengths and passions. We empower our students to build community and advocate for a more just and equitable world. Many aspects of our curriculum help our mission come alive, specifically with the elementary-aged children that we serve. A visit to New City includes classroom visits and small-group discussions with students, teachers, and administrators. Leave with a strong understanding of our mission, culture, and place in St. Louis.

John Burroughs School

John Burroughs School is committed to creating a sense of belonging and connectedness for all. Our Office of Diversity, Equity, Inclusivity, and Engagement has grown in size and scope in recent years and challenges itself to continually increase our support of our entire diverse community. We do this in a variety of ways, including a range of student cultural groups and affinity groups as well as a four-year required seminar sequence that covers topics of diversity and identity. Unique aspects of our culture include a whole-school assembly to begin each day and family-style lunches shared by students and teachers.

St. Joseph's Academy

St. Joseph’s Academy (SJA) is an all-girls, Catholic high school with a 183-year legacy of advocating for the rights and education of young women. In recent years, SJA has actively worked to increase our racial and socioeconomic diversity and create an environment in which all students feel safe bringing their full authentic selves to the community. Through affinity groups, social-justice initiatives, collaboration with other area high schools, community partnerships, student-created conferences, and an expansion of global education, we seek to create unique and enriching learning experiences based in faith and our school motto of “Not I, But We.”

Whitfield School

A small diverse community, Whitfield School is committed to helping students become their best selves. Join us to see our diverse student body in action at morning assembly. Our advisory program explicitly teaches the Habits of Mind and Heart, which are woven into everything we do. Take this opportunity to observe a Habits lesson focused on building cultural competence led by a teacher or by "Real Talk" peer facilitators. Also speak with members of our DEI Council, hear about our approach to bias incidents, learn about affinity groups, and visit our required intro to DEI course.
